Artist statement – Greg Malloy “Inch by Inch NYC”

The idea behind “Inch by Inch” was actually inspired by friends who were going to attend a show of mine years ago. They said, using hand gestures to mimic a specified size, “We would like a piece yay-

by-yay, in red and gold.” So, I created a work for that next show, keeping their specs in mind, but this size-specific request got me thinking about other peoples’ specific, and sometimes unusual, requirements when it comes to art and how that art fits into their homes.

In thinking about the size-requirements people often have for their homes, I started imagining huge, gallery-filling works of art and wondering what it would be like to cut these massive instillations into smaller pieces for people to fit into the space they have available. Over time, this concept evolved even further into what has now become my main goal in producing “Inch by Inch”: to create a shared experience. I want everyone who acquires a piece from the show to know that they are leaving with a small part of a larger whole and that they are now connected to other people, whether those other people are friends, relatives or perfect strangers. They are all now part of a shared community.

What I have also learned from my first “Inch by Inch” show was that the creative process for this body of work only starts me with me; it is the buyer who actually gets the last say in the creative process. The buyer gets to pick the final composition they go home with and gets to decide what to do with whatever shape and sized piece of my work that they ultimately choose. There are pieces of the original “Inch by Inch” show hanging on walls, sitting in frames on office shelves, used as decorative floor cloths in artful homes and there is even a long, skinny piece that a dear friend purchased and turned into a stylish belt. The possibilities are only as limited as ones imagination, and I love this!

I am extremely grateful for the continued support of my friends, family and patrons. I feel extremely privileged to be a part of your home!

Thank you so much,

Greg
